英语b级考试按百分制计分，满分为100分。B级60分及60分以上为及格；85分及85分以上为优秀。考试成绩合格者发给“高等学校英语应用能力考试”相应级别的合格证书。

高等学校英语应用能力考试于1998年经高教司批准向部分省、市、自治区推荐试行，2000年正式实施。发展至今，本门考试己为20余省、市、自治区采用，起到推动高职高专英语课程以“实用为主，应用为目的”的教学改革的目的，并逐渐为人才市场所认可。中国高等职业教育、普通高等专科教育和成人高等教育的教学目标是“以就业为目的、以市场为导向”，培养高级应用性技术型人才。其英语教学应贯彻”实用为主，够用为度”的方针；既要培养学生具备必要的英语语言基础知识，应强调培养学生运用英语进行有关日常和涉外业务工作的交际能力。

高等学校英语应用能力考试是为检测高职高专和成人高专学生是否达到所规定的教学要求而设置的考试。本考试以《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》（ 简称《基本要求》）为依据，既测试语言知识也着重测试语言技能，既测试一般与涉外业务有关的内容，并侧重后者，实用性内容约占60%。B级标准略低于A级，是过渡性要求。AB级的能力要求相当于大学英语三级水平，考试一般在每年上半年6月、下半年12月各举行一次。

A级覆盖《高职高专英语课程教学基本要求》的全部内容，需要掌握3400个英语单词及由这些词构成的常用词组；B级要求略低，需要掌握2500个英语单词及由这些单词构成的常用词组。AB级的能力要求相当于PETS-3（公共英语考试三级）水平，考试一般在每年上半年6月、下半年12月各举行一次。具体时间一般在四、六级考试的次日。考试按百分制计分，满分为100分。A级60分及60分以上为及格；85分及85分以上为优秀。B级60分及60分以上为及格；85分及85分以上为优秀。考试成绩合格者发给“高等学校英语应用能力考试”相应级别的合格证书。
