多式联运，是指从装运地到目的地的运输过程中包含两种以上的运输方式——海、陆、空、内河等。
《联合国国际货物多式联运公约》对国际多式联运所下的定义是：按照多式联运合同，已至少两种不同的运输方式，有多式联运经营人把货物从一国境内接运货物的地点运至另一国境内制定交付货物的地点。
譬如从上海到南非的约翰内斯堡（JOHANNESBURG），经过了海运——从上海到德班（DURBAN），再经陆运——德班到约翰内斯堡。这已经算是多式联运了。
但国际贸易意义上的多式联运，不光是要有这样的前提，而且要有“多式联运提单”——也就是“多式联运”合同。
而我们平常所做的虽然是这样的事实，但拿到的一般只是海运提单，而非“多式联运提单”，这样，虽有多式联运之实，但不符“多式联运”之定义。
