Christmas是由christ和-mas（即：Mass）两词合成的.Christ系源自于犹太的希伯来语（Hebrew Messiah）一词，汉语音译为＂弥赛亚＂.＂弥赛亚＂是犹太人期待的＂救世主＂.该词这一层意思是：The one/new baby was sent from God.（新生圣婴被上帝派送于世.）希腊人将Messiah只译了一层意思：christ（救世主）.后一半mas来自罗马拉丁语missia，英语写成Mass.Mas(s)意为to send.两词合成后，意为：the sending of the sent one/ new baby或The sent one/new baby has been sent by God.（应派送的人已由上帝派出了.）所以现在英语里有go to Mass（望弥撒）的词语.
