Until 1863, after the independence of the United States, President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.
In 1941, the United States Congress officially designated the fourth Thursday in November as ＂Thanksgiving Day＂.

在风俗习惯上，美国和加拿大基本一致，食俗有：吃烤火鸡、南瓜饼、红莓苔子果酱、甜山芋、玉蜀黍；活动有：玩蔓越桔竞赛、玉米游戏、南瓜赛跑；举行化装游行、戏剧表演或体育比赛等集体活动，并有相应的假期2天，在远方的人们都会回家与亲人团聚。现在还形成了豁免火鸡、黑色星期五购物等习惯。
