Tobacco was promoted in Europe in the 17th century as a cure for a number of ailments, including toothache, fatigue, and joint pains, as well as a calming agent. Smoking for enjoyment, however, was mainly responsible for the growth of the tobacco industry. By the time the following Collier's article was published in 1950, a campaign to warn smokers—who by then made up more than half of the American population—of potential dangerous effects of smoking was underway. Opposed to these efforts, the author argued that scientific attempts to link tobacco products to lung cancer and heart disease had failed and that the antismoking crusade interfered with needed research into more likely cancer causes. In 1951, an important medical study in London concluded that smoking was “an important factor” contributing to lung cancer. Despite a growing antismoking movement, aided by a 1979 Surgeon-General's report linking smoking to heart disease and the classification of nicotine as an addictive drug by the Food and Drug Administration in 1995, over five trillion cigarettes were sold that year. Threatened with state and local class-action lawsuits, the U.S. tobacco industry agreed in 1998 to a consent decree that settled 37 pending cases, quieted future claims, and ended certain types of tobacco advertising.

Nowadays many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. Some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. However, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. As far as I'm concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares. On the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. It is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. On the other hand, smoking pollutes the air.

Should Smoking in Public Places be Banned? Nowadays many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. Some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. However, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. As far as I'm concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares. On the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. It is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. On the other hand, smoking pollutes the air. Just imagine that you sit in a restaurant full of smoke, how can you enjoy your meal there? Besides, smoking is bad for the elevation of a country's image in the world. I believe if smoking is banned in all the public places, most of us will breathe in more fresh and clean air. And the health condition of all the people will be greatly improved.

As we all know,smoking is not only bad for our health,but also bad for our society.therefore,our govrenment has publish an ban about forbid people smoke at the public place form 2011.1.1,including the indoor pulic placces,indoor public workplaces and pulic transport means.this ban will first come into power in the medical system.
In order to make this ban come into power,we should do what we can to reduce the behavior of smoke around us.we can put up some posteres at public places to aware people this is no-somking place.Perhaps the most important ,and most easyist thing that we can do is we won't be a smoker.
It has a long and hard way to forbid somke,but I believe that if everyone follw this ban and take a googd care of their behavior,we will have a clear sky soon.
