原文： 万历间，宫中有鼠，大与猫等，为害甚剧。遍求民间佳猫捕制之，辄被啖食。适异国来贡狮猫，毛白如雪。抱投鼠屋，阖其扉，潜窥之。猫蹲良久，鼠逡巡自穴中出，见猫，怒奔之。猫避登几上，鼠亦登，猫则跃下。如此往复，不啻百次。众咸谓猫怯，以为是无能为者。既而鼠跳掷渐迟，硕腹似喘，蹲地上少休。猫即疾下，爪掬顶毛，口齕首领，辗转争持，猫声呜呜，鼠声啾啾。
启扉急视，则鼠首已嚼碎矣。然后知猫之避，非怯也，待其惰也。彼出则归，彼归则复，用此智耳。噫！匹夫按剑，何异鼠乎！ 译文： 明朝万历年间，皇宫中有老鼠，大小和猫差不多，为害极为严重。（皇家）从民间找遍了好猫捕捉老鼠，都被老鼠吃掉了。恰好有外国进贡来的狮猫，浑身毛色雪白。把狮猫投入（有）老鼠的屋子，关上窗户，偷偷观察。
猫蹲在地上很长时间，老鼠从洞中出来巡视，见到猫之后愤怒奔跑。猫避开跳到桌子上，老鼠也跳上桌子，猫就跳下来。如此往复，不少于一百多次。大家都说猫胆怯，以为是没有能为的猫。过了一段时间，老鼠跳跃动作渐渐迟缓，肥硕的肚皮看上去有些气喘，蹲在地上稍稍休息。猫随即快速跳下桌子，爪子抓住老鼠头顶毛，口咬住老鼠脖子，辗转往复争斗，猫呜呜的叫，老鼠啾啾的呻吟。
急忙打开窗户查看，老鼠脑袋已经嚼碎了。大家这才明白，狮猫开始时躲避大鼠，并不是害怕，而是等待它疲乏松懈啊！「敌人出击我便退回，敌人退下我又出来」，狮猫使用的就是这种智谋呀。 唉！那种不用 智谋，单凭个人血气的小勇的人，和这只大鼠有什麽不同呢？ 本文主旨：本文通过记叙猫鼠相斗，说明了宁斗智不斗力的道理。敌疲我打，后发制人，是克敌制胜的一种重要策略。
