考研复试中自我说明一般控制在2-3分钟较适宜。
首先，innovation（创新），那能够展现你具备创新意识方面的内容有哪些呢？比如是否发表过论文，有没有参加过演讲比赛，辩论比赛或作文比赛，有没有获过奖。除了创新方面，我们还可以从social practice（社会实践）和academic research（学术研究）方面的内容来展开。比如我们曾在大学期间做过哪些社会实践，从中有过什么样的收获，参与过哪个方面的学术研究，这些都可以重点提及。有同学可能会说，老师我没有做过相关的学术研究，那该怎么办？如果是这样的话，其实，我们也可以谈一谈大学本科的毕业论文设计，大家一定要明白老师最想听到什么，要有所针对，没有要舍本逐末地把我的家庭，我的家乡等等这些内容长篇累牍地展开说明，要有所侧重。
面试环节进行过程中，有时面试老师会提一些challenging questions（具有挑战性的话题），即一些比较难回答的问题，类似“If you fail to pass this examination, how would you do？”（如果你没考上怎么办？） 问类似问题，并不意味着你真考不上，而是面试官想要考查一下你的心理素质，看一下你的反应。我们千万不要以为自己前面表现的不好，千万不能出现慌乱的情绪，要take it easy. 也有的同学为了表决心，会这样回答，说：“不顺利便成仁”。如果这样回答的话，其实没有哪个老师敢要你。因为做科研什么的，实验失败的概率太高了，动不动就成仁，这还了得，那该怎么答呢？
其实面试老师更愿意听到这样的答案，“老师，我会再考一年，但失败后，我会主动去找各位老师谈一下，搞清楚与其他学生相比，我的弱势在哪儿？然后进行针对性查漏补缺，希望明年能考上”。接到类似具有挑战性的话题，一定要想好该如何回答。再比如，如果问你，Did you pass the CET-6 during the college time？ （在大学期间，你过六级考试了吗？）如果没过，就一定要坦诚的说，“没过”。然后再加以补充说，“但我已经认识到了英语的重要性，我会努力过的”。可千万不要说，“我平时做实验很忙，没时间考”之类的话。这是很明显在为自己找借口，老师一听就听出来了，一定要坦诚些。
另外，我们需要了解的是面试场合并不是只有一位面试官，通常会有多位面试老师。这些面试老师其实是有分工的。所谓的分工就是有黑脸，白脸之分。有人唱白脸，有人唱黑脸，负责唱“黑脸”的老师总是在疯狂地找你的茬，挑你的刺儿。遇到这样的情况，如果你觉得自己说的确实有道理，一定要据理力争，但要有礼貌，切不可顶撞老师。如果认为老师挑刺儿挑的对，就要勇于承认自己的不足之处。

兴趣，即强调对所报考的专业怀有极大的兴趣（have significant interest in…）。如果本科就读的专业与报考的专业一致，则可以说明想继续深造（further education）的愿望。如果不一致，则要说明报考专业对你的吸引力 （…appeals to/attracts me a lot）。
优势，即强调研究生相对于本科生在知识、学术方面的优势，如：知识面更广（wider knowledge），学术更专业（more professional），眼界更广阔等（broaden one's horizon）。
益处，即强调考研对你的未来的积极影响（have a positive effect on…），可以从求职、职业规划、人生经历等方面入手进行说明。可参考的词汇、短语如下：be helpful, contribute to, be beneficial to, be conductive to, be a definite advantage, become a strong point when it comes to… 等等。
然后，可以在自我说明中展现自己对未来的规划，其目的在于向老师们展示自己对时间、学习、人生有一定计划性和掌控能力。I plan to concentrate on study and research in this field in my graduate time.
