Just- in – time is a philosophy of continuous and forced problem solving. With JIT, Supplies and components, are “pulled” through a system to arrive where they are needed when they are needed. When good units do not arrive just as needed, a problem has been identified. This makes Jit an excellent tool to help operations managers add value by driving out waste and unwanted variability. Because there is no excess inventory or excess time in a JIT system, coste associated with unneeded inventory are eliminated and throughput improved. Consquently, the benefits of JIT, are particularly helpful in supporting strategies of rapid response and low cost.
Computerised systems allow information and data to be gathered and analysed, to ensure that the right materials required for the production process are always available at the right time. This facilitates reduced stockholding by matching deliveries to the point in time that they are required for consumption. This is known as just in time (JIT). JIT is most applicable to manufacturing where parts are required for production lines in specific quantities and of a specific quality.
The JIT concept is that if made-in parts are produced in the right quantity for the next stage of the process and are ready for the next operation to be carried out, then work-in-progress stocks are almost eliminated. Similarly, if bought-in parts are delivered direct to the ed. Buffer stocks are not provided, so shortages and bottlenecks are highlighted for immediate at the right time and in the right quantity, then material stocks are also largely eliminat.
